A reload bonus is a deposit match bonus offered to existing players - the casino's equivalent of a returning-customer discount. Where a welcome bonus is designed to attract new sign-ups, reload bonuses are retention tools. They appear regularly in casino promotions: weekly reload, weekend offer, VIP reload, crypto deposit reload.

Reload bonuses follow the same structure as welcome bonuses and carry the same risks. The percentage is usually lower (10-50% vs 100-200% for welcome bonuses), but the wagering requirements are often identical or higher. Here is what to check before claiming one.

How reload bonuses work

You make a qualifying deposit during the promotional period. The casino credits a bonus amount as a percentage of your deposit, up to a maximum cap. The bonus comes with a wagering requirement that must be completed before any bonus-derived winnings can be withdrawn.

Example: 50% reload bonus up to $200, 30x wagering (deposit plus bonus). You deposit $200, receive $100 bonus (total $300). Wagering required: $300 x 30 = $9,000. At 4% house edge on slots, expected loss during wagering: $360. Net outcome: you received $100 of nominal bonus and are expected to lose $360 clearing it.

Deposit plus bonus wagering (also called "D+B wagering") is significantly more restrictive than bonus-only wagering. At the same multiplier, D+B wagering requires twice the real-money exposure. Always check which type applies to a reload before depositing. See our wagering requirements guide for the full breakdown.

Why reload bonuses are offered more frequently than welcome bonuses

Retention cost is lower than acquisition cost for a casino. Offering existing players a 25% reload bonus costs less in marketing spend than acquiring a new player through affiliate channels. But the primary purpose of a reload bonus is to trigger a deposit from a player who might otherwise withdraw their balance and leave. The bonus creates a financial incentive to add funds during a specific window.

The timing of reload bonus offers is not random. Casinos are more likely to send reload bonus promotions to players who have had a profitable recent session (when they might withdraw) or to players who have been inactive (to re-engage them before they close their account). The offer is optimised around the casino's retention needs, not the player's interests.

Types of reload bonus structures

Weekly or monthly scheduled reloads

A fixed reload available to all eligible players on a set day. Percentages range from 10-50%. These are the most transparent structure - the terms are usually published clearly. They are still subject to the same expected value calculation as any other bonus.

Triggered or personalised reloads

Sent directly to specific players based on behaviour - activity level, recent wins, balance movement. These are often higher percentage (up to 100%) but sent to players at moments when claiming is statistically most likely. The personalisation is for the casino's benefit.

Crypto-specific reload bonuses

Some platforms offer higher reload percentages for deposits in specific cryptocurrencies (BTC, ETH, or newer coins). The bonus structure is the same but the crypto requirement creates payment method lock-in. The terms are not materially different from standard reloads.

When a reload bonus might be worth claiming

The same filter applies as for any bonus: the offer has positive expected value when the wagering requirement is below 10x on a game with less than 1% house edge, and the bonus applies to bonus amount only (not deposit plus bonus). This is rare.

There are two additional factors specific to reloads:

  • Check whether the reload applies to your deposit or just the bonus amount. Deposit plus bonus wagering at even 15x is equivalent to 30x bonus-only wagering in real exposure.
  • Check whether previous bonus wagering history is tracked. Some casinos apply lower wagering multipliers to established accounts. If you have completed multiple bonuses without issues, the terms offered to you personally may differ from the public offer.

The alternative approach

Platforms that use ongoing rakeback eliminate the reload bonus cycle entirely. Rather than periodic deposit incentives with conditions, they return a percentage of every bet permanently. Moonbet's 0.5% combined rewards boost and lossback applies to every session without requiring a deposit trigger or a promotional window. Duel's 50% rakeback on slots credits every spin without a qualifying deposit or a wagering event.

The comparison over 12 months: a monthly 25% reload bonus claimed each month at 30x wagering on 4% house edge slots produces expected negative value every single month. Rakeback at 1% of volume produces positive return every single month. See the full comparison: how rakeback works and why it beats bonuses.

Reload bonus checklist

  • Is wagering applied to bonus only or deposit plus bonus?
  • What is the wagering multiplier?
  • Which games contribute 100%? Check table game contribution separately.
  • Is there a maximum cashout on winnings from the reload?
  • What is the expiry period?
  • Is the bonus sticky or non-sticky?
  • Does claiming this reload void any existing balance or active bonus?
