If you have accepted a casino bonus and need to clear the wagering requirement, the decisions you make about which games to play, how much to bet per round, and when to stop have a real impact on your expected outcome. Most players approach this without a strategy, which is why casino margins on bonus play are significantly higher than on regular play.

This guide covers the exact steps to give yourself the best mathematical chance of clearing a wagering requirement with money left to withdraw - and when it is better to forfeit the bonus entirely and withdraw your deposit instead.

Step 1: Calculate whether clearing is worth attempting

Before any strategy, run the expected value calculation. You need three numbers: the wagering requirement total, the house edge of the game you plan to clear on, and the bonus amount.

Formula: Expected net value = Bonus amount - (Total wagering required x House edge)

Example: $50 bonus, 30x bonus-only wagering, clearing on blackjack at 0.5% house edge.

  • Total wagering required: $50 x 30 = $1,500
  • Expected loss during wagering: $1,500 x 0.5% = $7.50
  • Expected net value of the bonus: $50 - $7.50 = $42.50

This bonus has a positive expected value worth attempting to clear. Now run the same on slots at 4% house edge: expected loss = $60 - the bonus has negative expected value and should not be attempted. Forfeit it and withdraw your deposit.

If the expected loss during wagering exceeds the bonus amount at any game available to you, forfeiting the bonus is the correct decision. Contact support to cancel the bonus (if possible) and withdraw your deposit balance before any wagering occurs. Do not attempt to clear a mathematically negative bonus.

Step 2: Choose the highest-RTP qualifying game

House edge is the most important variable in the clearing calculation. Lower house edge = lower expected loss = better net outcome from the bonus.

  • Blackjack with basic strategy: 0.3-0.5% house edge (best option if it contributes 100%)
  • Baccarat (banker bet): 1.06% house edge
  • European Roulette: 2.7% house edge
  • Slots: typically 3-6% house edge (worst option for clearing)
  • Video poker (Jacks or Better, optimal): 0.5% house edge

Always check the game contribution rate before choosing. Blackjack contributing 10% to wagering at 0.5% house edge is equivalent to a game contributing 100% at 5% house edge - the actual maths are identical. Only the headline house edge matters if contribution rates are factored in correctly. See our wagering requirements guide for contribution rate calculations.

Step 3: Set your bet size correctly

Bet size during bonus wagering affects two things: the speed of clearing and the variance of your session. Lower bets take longer to clear but reduce the chance of a large variance swing depleting your balance before the requirement is met.

A practical target: bet size should be no more than 1-2% of your total bonus-inclusive balance per round. On a $200 total balance ($100 deposit + $100 bonus), maximum bet of $2-$4 per hand of blackjack. This gives you 50-100 hands of runway before the balance is meaningfully at risk from variance.

Never bet more than the bonus maximum bet restriction. This is typically $3-$5 per bet while a bonus is active. Exceeding it voids the bonus and all associated winnings, even after completing the wagering requirement.

Step 4: Track your progress

Most casinos display bonus wagering progress in the promotions or account section. Check it before each session, not during. Checking mid-session creates temptation to increase bet sizes to clear faster - which increases house edge exposure and variance without improving the expected outcome.

Set a session end point before you start: either a specific wagering amount completed (e.g., $300 of $1,500 required per session) or a time limit. Do not extend sessions because you are close to clearing - near completion is not a mathematical justification for additional exposure.

Step 5: Know when to stop mid-clearing

If your balance drops below the bonus amount during clearing, continuing is mathematically equivalent to playing on the casino's money with a house edge applied. The expected loss per additional bet increases as a percentage of remaining balance.

There is no mathematical rule that says continuing to clear is correct when your balance has halved. The house edge on remaining wagering is identical whether your balance is high or low. The correct decision at any point during clearing is the same decision you would make before starting: does the expected value of completing the requirement exceed the expected loss?

Step 6: Withdraw as soon as requirements are met

Once the wagering requirement is cleared, initiate a withdrawal immediately. Do not continue playing "just a bit more" on the freed balance. The bonus is cleared - additional play beyond this point is at full house edge with no bonus value to offset it.

Check for a maximum cashout cap before withdrawing. If your balance after clearing exceeds the cap, you cannot withdraw the full amount. Contact support before placing the withdrawal to confirm the cap and whether any portion of your winnings are subject to it.

When forfeiting a bonus is the right move

  • The expected loss during clearing exceeds the bonus amount at any available game
  • The only qualifying game is slots with house edge above 3%
  • Table game contribution is under 20% (making effective wagering multiplier 5x+ higher)
  • The bonus is sticky and your balance is already below the bonus amount
  • The remaining wagering requirement would take more time than the expiry allows at your sustainable bet size

To forfeit a bonus, contact live support and request cancellation before placing any bets. Once any wagering occurs under the active bonus, cancellation terms vary by platform.
