A 200% welcome bonus up to 1 BTC sounds like the casino is handing you money. It is not. It is a marketing number attached to a set of conditions that, in most cases, make the bonus worth less than zero to a regular player. This is not a matter of opinion. The maths are straightforward, and this post runs through them.

Two of our three Safe Choice picks - Moonbet and Duel - do not offer a welcome bonus at all. This is a deliberate choice on their part, and it is one of the reasons they rank where they do. Here is why.

What the bonus headline does not tell you

When a casino advertises a 100% match bonus up to 0.5 BTC, the headline number is the maximum bonus credit you can receive. Every other relevant piece of information is in the fine print: the wagering requirement, the game contribution rates, the maximum bet size, the expiry window, and the maximum cashout. The headline is designed to create a number large enough to attract attention. The terms are designed to ensure most of that credit never becomes withdrawable cash.

No casino offers a bonus as a gift. The bonus is a mechanism to get you to deposit and play. Its design, at the terms level, is to recover more than it gives out. The casinos are profitable businesses. The bonus is part of the margin calculation, not an exception to it.

The wagering requirement: the core mechanism

Every welcome bonus carries a wagering requirement - a multiplier that specifies how much you must bet before any winnings derived from the bonus can be withdrawn. A 30x wagering requirement on a 0.1 BTC bonus means you must place 3 BTC in total bets. At a 40x requirement, that is 4 BTC in bets to release 0.1 BTC in bonus credit.

The expected loss during wagering depends on the house edge of the game you use to clear it. Playing slots at 5% house edge through 4 BTC of wagering: expected loss is 0.2 BTC. The bonus was 0.1 BTC. The expected outcome of accepting and attempting to clear this bonus, using the game type the casino recommends, is a 0.1 BTC net loss.

Playing blackjack with basic strategy at 0.5% house edge through 4 BTC: expected loss 0.02 BTC. The bonus is positive-expected-value on low-edge games. This is exactly why most casinos restrict blackjack contribution to 10-20% - meaning you effectively need to wager 20-40x more than the stated multiplier to clear the requirement on table games.

If a casino's bonus terms do not specify game contribution rates, contact support before depositing. The default assumption - that blackjack counts 100% toward wagering - is almost never correct. Casinos that omit this information from the main bonus page routinely bury it in a separate terms document. Full explanation: wagering requirements explained.

The maximum bet restriction

Almost every bonus includes a maximum bet size while the bonus is active - typically 5 USD or equivalent. Placing a bet above this limit while a bonus is active results in the bonus and all associated winnings being voided, even after you have completed the wagering requirement. This is enforced automatically.

The result: you cannot increase bet size to clear the requirement faster. You must play at artificially low stakes for the entire duration of the wagering requirement. Any deviation - including a single bet above the limit - forfeits everything.

Expiry windows

Most welcome bonuses expire in 7-30 days. A 30x wagering requirement on a 0.1 BTC bonus at a 5 USD maximum bet requires thousands of individual bets at the speed most players maintain. Many players cannot clear the requirement before expiry. When expiry hits, the bonus and any winnings are forfeited.

Maximum cashout caps

Even if you clear the wagering requirement, many bonuses cap the amount you can withdraw from bonus-derived winnings - commonly 2-5x the bonus amount. A 0.1 BTC bonus with a 5x cap means the maximum you can ever withdraw from that bonus is 0.5 BTC, regardless of how much you win during the clearing process. On high-variance games like slots, where large wins are the whole point, this cap removes the upside while the wagering requirement maintains the downside.

The free spin version of the same problem

Free spins bonuses follow the same structure with lower headline numbers. 100 free spins at 0.10 USD per spin produces a theoretical maximum value of 10 USD in winnings. Those winnings are then subject to a 30-50x wagering requirement. At 30x, you need to wager 300 USD in spins to release the 10 USD. Expected loss at 5% house edge through 300 USD: 15 USD. The free spins have a negative expected value before you have played a single one.

Free spins bonuses are almost universally negative expected value after wagering requirements are applied. The only exception is no-wagering free spins, which a small number of casinos offer - and which are worth significantly less per spin because the casino calibrates the value accordingly.

Why the casino is always ahead

The bonus and its attached terms are designed by analysts who know the exact house edge, average bet size, average clearance rate, and churn percentage for every player segment. The wagering requirement is set to a level that ensures the bonus is profitable for the casino across the player base as a whole, even accounting for the minority of players who clear it successfully. Individual players occasionally extract value from a bonus. The casino extracts profit from all of them combined.

What rakeback actually is

Rakeback returns a percentage of the house edge on every bet you place, unconditionally. No wagering requirement. No maximum bet restriction. No expiry. No game restriction. No cashout cap. The return accrues from the first bet and is paid according to the schedule the casino specifies - daily, weekly, or on demand.

A 5% rakeback rate on 0.1 BTC of total bets placed returns 0.005 BTC. No conditions. You can withdraw it immediately when it is credited.

Lossback: a different mechanism for the same principle

Lossback (sometimes called cashback) returns a percentage of net losses over a period - typically weekly. Unlike rakeback, which applies to all bets regardless of outcome, lossback only applies when you are down. The effect is a floor under your downside: a proportion of your losses is returned automatically.

A 10% weekly lossback on a 0.05 BTC net loss returns 0.005 BTC at the end of the week. No wagering requirement is attached to this return at legitimate platforms. It is real money, withdrawable immediately.

How Moonbet and Duel approach bonuses differently

Moonbet offers a 200% welcome bonus up to 1 BTC using a drip-feed model: $10 of bonus is released per $1,000 wagered, with no wagering requirements locking your original deposit. Rakeback, lossback, and Moondrops all run simultaneously on top of this from day one. Duel offers no welcome bonus at all and instead returns 50% of the house edge on every slot spin as instant rakeback with no conditions.

This is also why they rank first and second on our Trust Index. Neither casino hides real costs behind inflated headline numbers or conditions designed to make the bonus impossible to extract.

The comparison in numbers

  • Casino A: 100% bonus up to 0.1 BTC, 40x wagering, 5% house edge on slots, 10% blackjack contribution, 30-day expiry, 3x cashout cap. Expected value for a typical player: negative.
  • Moonbet: 200% bonus up to 1 BTC (drip-feed, deposit stays liquid), rakeback, lossback, Moondrops. Expected return after 0.1 BTC of play: meaningful rakeback with no conditions. Full Moonbet review.
  • Duel: no welcome bonus, 50% instant rakeback on all slots, 100% RTP Originals, no lossback, immediate withdrawals. Full Duel review.

The one exception: no-wagering bonuses

A small number of platforms offer no-wagering bonuses - cash credited to your account with no conditions attached. These are genuinely what a bonus should be: real money you can withdraw or use freely. They are uncommon because they are expensive for the casino to offer. When you see one, the headline number is what you actually receive. Check that there is truly no wagering requirement attached and no cashout cap before treating it as equivalent to cash.

How to evaluate any bonus before accepting it

  • What is the wagering requirement, and does it apply to deposit plus bonus or bonus only?
  • What percentage do blackjack and other low-edge games contribute toward the requirement?
  • What is the maximum bet size while the bonus is active?
  • What is the expiry window?
  • Is there a maximum cashout cap on bonus winnings?
  • If all answers are not immediately available in the bonus terms, that is itself a flag.
