Wagering requirements are the single most important number attached to any casino bonus. They determine when - and whether - you can withdraw bonus-derived winnings. Most players accept a bonus without calculating the wagering requirement. This guide shows you how to do the calculation and what the result actually means for your money.

What wagering requirements are

A wagering requirement is a multiplier applied to your bonus (sometimes your bonus plus deposit) that specifies how much total play you must complete before any winnings become withdrawable. A 30x wagering requirement on a 0.01 BTC bonus means you must place 0.30 BTC in total bets before withdrawal is unlocked.

Wagering requirements do not mean you will lose that amount. They mean you must place that amount in bets. If you win during the wagering period, those winnings contribute to the requirement being met. If you lose, the remaining requirement is still owed.

Three types of wagering requirement structure explained

Bonus-only wagering

The requirement applies only to the bonus amount. If you receive a 0.01 BTC bonus with a 30x bonus-only requirement, you must wager 0.30 BTC total. Your original deposit is free to withdraw at any time.

Deposit plus bonus wagering

The requirement applies to your deposit plus the bonus. A 0.01 BTC deposit with a 100% match bonus (0.01 BTC bonus) at 30x means you must wager 0.60 BTC. This is twice as restrictive as bonus-only at the same multiplier. This structure is common and is often the default when casinos do not specify which type applies.

Winnings-only wagering

Less common. The requirement applies only to free spin winnings, not a cash bonus. A 0.001 BTC win from free spins at 40x means you must wager 0.04 BTC before withdrawing those winnings. Your base balance is unaffected.

How to calculate the effective bonus value

To find the expected cash value of a bonus, you need: the bonus amount, the wagering requirement multiplier, and the house edge of the games you will play to clear it.

Formula: Expected value = Bonus amount - (Wagering requirement x House edge)

Example: 0.01 BTC bonus, 40x requirement (bonus only), playing blackjack at 0.5% house edge.

  • Wagering required: 0.01 BTC x 40 = 0.40 BTC
  • Expected loss during wagering: 0.40 BTC x 0.5% = 0.002 BTC
  • Expected net value: 0.01 BTC - 0.002 BTC = 0.008 BTC

The same bonus played on slots at 5% house edge:

  • Wagering required: 0.40 BTC
  • Expected loss during wagering: 0.40 BTC x 5% = 0.02 BTC
  • Expected net value: 0.01 BTC - 0.02 BTC = -0.01 BTC (negative)

The same bonus has a positive expected value on low-edge games and a negative expected value on high-edge games. Always calculate which game you intend to use to clear the requirement, and whether that game contributes 100% to the wagering count - many casinos restrict game contributions.

Game contribution rates

Most casinos apply a contribution rate to different game types. Slots typically contribute 100%. Table games like blackjack often contribute only 10-20%. This means that to clear a 30x requirement using blackjack at a 10% contribution rate, you must actually wager 300x the bonus amount in blackjack hands - not 30x.

If the bonus terms do not specify contribution rates, assume table games contribute 10% or less. Casinos that omit this information in the main bonus description typically bury it in the full terms. See how to find it: how to read casino terms and conditions.

Wagering requirement time limits and bonus expiry

Wagering requirements must typically be completed within a set window - commonly 7-30 days. If you do not complete the requirement within this period, the bonus and any associated winnings are forfeited. Check the expiry period before accepting any bonus.

Maximum bet restrictions while wagering a casino bonus

Most bonus terms include a maximum bet size while a bonus is active - commonly 5 USD equivalent. Placing bets above this limit can result in the bonus and all associated winnings being voided, even if you have completed the wagering requirement. This is enforced via automated systems, not manual review.

The maximum bet restriction is strictly enforced. Winning a large amount from a bet that exceeded the bonus maximum will typically result in the winnings being voided, even after wagering completion. Read the maximum bet size before any session with an active bonus. This is documented in our bonus abuse clauses guide.

Why rakeback often outperforms welcome bonuses

Rakeback is paid on every bet without conditions, time limits, game restrictions, or maximum bet rules. A 5% rakeback rate on 0.40 BTC of play returns 0.02 BTC unconditionally. The same 0.40 BTC clearing a 40x bonus requirement on a 0.01 BTC bonus returns 0.01 BTC minus expected losses - and only if you complete the requirement within the time window without triggering any exclusion. Checklist before accepting any crypto casino bonus

  • What is the wagering requirement multiplier?
  • Does it apply to bonus only, or deposit plus bonus?
  • What is the contribution rate for the game type you plan to play?
  • What is the maximum bet allowed while the bonus is active?
  • What is the expiry period?
  • Is there a maximum cashout cap on bonus winnings?

All of these are in the bonus terms. If any are missing, contact support before depositing - not after.
